i used to work with these back in the early eighties.

i worked for a company that published tech manuals...
and after they'd been proofed...
and typos flagged...
i would type the correct word(s) on a typewriter...
and working on a light table...
line up both copies...
and cut thru them both.

then...
insert the correct word(s) into the hole...
and tape and smooth the back...
and voilà...
the typo was now gone...
and the book(s) could be printed.
