i used to work with these back in the early eighties.

i worked for a company that published tech manuals...
and after they'd been proofed...
and typos flagged...
i would type the correct word(s) on a typewriter...
and working on a light table...
line up both copies...
and cut thru them both.

then...
insert the correct word(s) into the hole...
and tape and smooth the back...
and voilà...
the typo was now gone...
and the book(s) could be printed.

this is a wheel from the 'frog on a bike wind spinner'.
i bought this for my mother on a trip to pt. reyes a few years ago.

she only puts it in the backyard every so often...
to keep him from getting wind torn & faded.

they have a class at our church...
and since i knew i would take a kazillion photos of her...
this is a great project for them.

after frustration with photographing a quart of water...
i expressed to the hubby that it was letter 'q' day...
and i was stuck.

he came back with...
q-tips!

i was ecstatic...
and continued upstairs to get the box.

hot peppers...
to be specific.

i grow them...
and dry them...
and make hot sauce.

the larger ones on the left...
are cayenne.
i had great success with them last year...
and will plant them again this year.

the three piles of medium-sized peppers...
are all thai chiles.

the two in the middle with the stems on them...
i grew.
the ones in the bottom right...
i purchased in napa.

the tiny ones in the upper right...
are pequin chili peppers.
i also purchased those in napa.

last year i planted five different types of peppers...
but only had success with two.
this year...
i will try again.

it's not easy to get a milk moustache.

i thought i could just tip the glass...
and pretend to drink...
and i'd have a moustache.

but...
that wasn't the case.

so i actually took my finger...
and painted the milk on...
and then...
added some photoshop magic...
to enhance it a bit more.

i have a kwikset lock on my door...
and can use a key...
or the keypad to get into the house.

it comes in handy if you need to have someone enter your house...
and you're not there.
you can give them a code.

ice cubes.

my initial concept...
was to get the ice cubes as they were falling into the glass.
they filled the glass before i pressed the shutter.

my second idea...
was to capture the tea...
as i poured it into the glass.

and then...
i saw that the ice cubes had BROKEN my new fave glass...
as they came crashing out of the ice dispenser. :(

so...
i took this photo.
then poured it all out since there was also glass in my tea...
and poured myself a glass of wine.

i hope i can find the glass again.
i will look tomorrow.

hydrangeas.

i'm a gardener...
and i grow hydrangeas in my garden...
but mine are pink, blue and purple.

this year...
i want some white ones...
so i think i'll visit my nursery this weekend.

one thing about cutting hydrangeas...
you should put the flowers into hot water immediately after cutting.
i usually rinse the but stems...
and then add hot water to the vase also...
and my flowers will last for DAYS!!!

when i brought these flowers into the office on wednesday...
one of my co-workers mentioned that she'd bought some...
that had wilted within a couple of hours of purchasing them.
i told her about the hot water method...
and then showed her how fresh they still looked on thursday.

and...
as you can see...
they're still beautiful!

gumballs.

i'd already planned out my photo for today...
but when i was driving home yesterday...
i thought of gumballs...
and knew my photo was changing.

i exited the freeway to go by a candy shop i know of...
but they weren't there. :(
my next stop...
target!!!

i was happier than a kid in a candy store when i saw them.

i opened them last night...
and chewed a couple of pieces.
sugary sweet and as hard as i remember.

in this photo...
i have a martini glass full of gumballs...
with some scattered on my ipad below...
on the photo soft box app...
and i'm shooting with a very shallow dof...
and a 3x filter.

flute.

full of fingerprints flute...
with a bit of tarnishing...
and a touch of HDR...
but its still operational.

i got this flute forty-five years ago...
when i was in fifth grade.
wow!!!

i was in band class for a few years...
then i moved to japan.
we had no band classes there...
so i gave lessons to a ten year old...
that had just moved over there.

when i returned to the 'states'...
i enrolled in band classes again...
and thoroughly enjoyed my time in marching band...
and participating in parades.

fast-forward...
the flute passes down to my daughter...
and she enrolls in band classes.

she and i were talking a couple of weeks ago...
and i discovered that her group of friends...
that she's had since elementary school...
were bandmates of hers.

my niece loves music.
perhaps she'll take an interest in it when she's older...
and it will play those beautifully, melodic sounds once more.

i would blow the bubbles...
and then try to chase them around the yard...
trying to get them into focus...
so i could get my photo.

at first i tried to take a photo of a single bubble.
that wasn't working out too good.

so i then opted for the group method.
which was a lot easier.

i bought these for him a little while ago.
it doesn't look like he's used them.
perhaps i'll take them for myself...

my potd will consists of shooting thru the alphabet.

i had quite a few 'A' photos today...
but decided on this one.
now...
to go contemplate what i'll shoot for 'B'.
